JoAnne L. Tompkins
Former Court of Appeals Commissioner

Commissioner Tompkins is on an indefinite long term leave and is not available for any case settings at this time. JDR will provide at least six months notice before her return. Until such time, we regret that we cannot set cases for her and Commissioner Tompkins apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

Commissioner Tompkins served from 1986-1989 with the Washington State Court of Appeals, and heard the full spectrum of legal issues on appeal. Before taking the bench, she practiced law for six years, during which time she became a partner in Williams, Kastner & Gibbs in Seattle.

Experience & Specialties
Since becoming a full-time mediator and arbitrator in June 1990, Commissioner Tompkins has conducted over 2,000 mediations and arbitrations, primarily in the areas of employment law, professional malpractice, personal injury, environmental matters and business litigation including complex multi-party cases. She has also heard cases in the area of marriage dissolution, construction and product liability and has been appointed as a discovery master on major litigation matters.

During her tenure on the Appellate Court, Commissioner Tompkins conducted approximately 300 settlement conferences for civil cases on appeal.

In private practice, she specialized in the areas of medical malpractice, product liability, appellate law, insurance law and personal injury. She also handled corporate matters, contract disputes and issues involving labor law.

Commissioner Tompkins has participated in advanced mediation seminars in both general civil law and family law. She frequently serves as a speaker on the subjects of mediation, arbitration, negotiation and gender issues for bar associations and other organizations.
